yes and no, its an applied subject as opposed to a pure subject and as such you'll get people who think one way or the other about it.
I think purists (like me) tend to write off the applied people because what they do tends do be a bit easier and they make way more money so I think if anything its really boils down to an issue of jealousy.

As for me, stats doesn't interest me as a subject but what you can do with data analysis is amazing (cf nate silver)
